LORENZO LIPPI (Florence, 1606-1665)
SAINT JOHN THE EVANGELIST
Original canvas
Old restorations
John the Baptist, original canvas, with restorations
68 x 50,5 CM - 26,7 x 19,8 IN.
A painter and poet, Lorenzo Lippi was a pupil of Matteo Rosselli. He is known for his subtle realism and meticulous study of light.
The light, which clearly outlines the profile, and the saint's inward gaze mean that we can compare Saint John with Saint Cosmo (Canvas, 110 x 97 CM, from the Kress Collection at the Isaac Delgado Museum of Art, New Orleans) and date our painting to the 1640s.
The attribution has been confirmed by Francesca Baldassari.
