Lot no. 34
LORENZO PASINELLI (Bologna, 1629-1700) ALLEGORY OF PEACE AND JUSTICE Canvas Old restorations Allegory of Peace and Justice, canvas, with restorations 84,5 x 99 CM - 33 x 39 IN. We can compare our work with a larger version preserved in Hamburg and date it to around 1661-1665. Lorenzo Pasinelli began his career in the workshop of Simone Cantarini and then Flaminio Torri, where he assimilated the art of Guido Reni. In 1661 Pasinelli worked in Mantua for the Gonzaga family, then in Turin and Rome. In 1672, he settled permanently in Bologna, where he took over the studio of Domenico Maria Canuti, who had left for Rome. He thus became one of Bologna's most important artists, alongside Carlo Cignani. His work is characterised by an elegant and refined style. He favoured religious and mythological subjects, often marked by great finesse in the treatment of figures and drapery. The iconography of our painting is based directly on Psalm 85: "Yes, his salvation is near those who fear him, so that glory may dwell in our land. Goodness and truth meet, righteousness and peace embrace; Truth springs from the earth, And righteousness looks down from heaven."
