Michel Berr (1781-1843), the first French lawyer of the Jewish faith, member of the Nancy bar and of several learned societies, was one of the great defenders of Jewish emancipation, following in the footsteps of his father Berr-Isaac Berr de Turique, deputy of the Jews of Lorraine to the National Assembly, but also of another famous Lorraine native, Abbé Grégoire, to whom this Appeal is dedicated.
