First edition of one of the finest and rarest albums on the Chamonix valley published in the early 19th century. With 7 plates engraved in aquatint, watercoloured and gummed at the time. The general view of the Chamouni valley (pages 7 to 14) is by Jean-Frédéric Osterwald. List of magnificent views of the Chamonix valley and Mont-Blanc, very well done and finely coloured at the time: the Nant d'Arpenas waterfall; Mont-Blanc, from St-Martin; the Lac de Chêde; the Glacier des Bois and the Source de l'Arveyron; the Mer de Glace, from Montenvers; Mont-Blanc, from Couvercle; View from la Flégère. Each view is accompanied by 2 to 3 pages of text. The Lory family (father and son), originally from Bern, are among the best Swiss artists to have contributed to the depiction of high-mountain landscapes. A fine copy with wide margins.
