Lot no. 1078
LOT COMPRISING THREE ENAMEL MEDALLIONS - The Embden Collection Limoges, second half of the 16th century. Attributed to the workshop of Pierre Reymond (1513–1584). Polychrome and parcel-gilt enamel medallions, each with three round perforations. Depicting a crucifixion, St. John the Baptist, and St. Jerome. St. Jerome with remnants of an old label on verso; crucifixion numbered 208 on the label on verso. Ø each 5.2 cm. Minor chips to the edge. St. Jerome under UV light with a hairline crack on the lower right and lion with small retouches. St. John the Baptist with a restored crack. Provenance: The Arlette and Antony Embden Collection, France. These medallions are probably from a series, such as those found in the Taft Museum of Arts in Cincinnati. The museum has a total of 12 round medallions with scenes from the life of Christ and four other saints, which are attributed to the Pierre Reymond workshop. The identical depiction of St. Jerome with the lion in a rocky landscape and the crucifixion scene are in the museum's inventory as well (Inv. Nos. 1931.511 & 1931.503). The medallions from the Taft Museum have the same dimensions, although the perforations for suspending them differ from the examples on offer. The comparison with a plaque from the Frick Collection, which depicts 'Agony in the Garden' as its central motif and is lined with six enamel medallions, is also worthwhile. One of the six medallions is identical to one of the medallions on offer, which shows John the Baptist. The Frick Collection points out that the round medallions were only assembled with the central plaque in the 19th century, meaning that the medallions may not have originated in the same studio. * The full tax is charged on this item marked *, i.e. VAT is charged on the sum will be refunded to Purchasers providing a validly stamped export declaration.
