Lot no. 319
Set of two snuff boxes
Made of horn and metal. The first is decorated in ink and bears the surname: ‘Jean Coueyras’, followed by an erased reference to his trade ‘…rtier’ and, finally, the humorous phrase: ‘Take a pinch, just give some to your wife’. On the reverse, a clog-maker is at work, carving a clog on a block of wood, set against a background of interlacing patterns. A clog is depicted on each side. The second is also decorated in ink and bears the following inscriptions, in two panels: ‘Long live the coachman // Pierre Bracher’, above an eight-horse team, with the coachman seated on one of his horses and his whip raised in the air. On the other side, a single-horse team, with a coachman seated on the horse, pulls a simple cart. A horse’s head is depicted on each side, within a circular medallion adorned with acanthus leaves.
