Oil on canvas. Signed lower left. 71 x 58 cm Provenance: Collection of Professor Xenia Muratova, great-niece of Pavel Muratov This painting corresponds to Kontchalovsky's 1910s. It combines cubism, still life and bread, probably on his return from his trip to Europe, particularly Spain (1911-1912) (pan = bread). Bread was a theme he explored in several paintings from this period: "Bread on a Tray Background" 1912, "Bread on a Blue Background" 1913, "Bread on a Green Background" 1913 through to the 1920s ("Breads" in the Smolensk Museum). Still lifes with bread were very common at the end of the nineteenth century and the beginning of the twentieth: Vlaminck, Cézanne, Picasso, Machkov, etc. V. A. Nikolsky's monograph includes four works entitled "Cristal", one in 1917, two others in 1919 and one in 1921.
