LOT OF TWO KNIVES WITH CARVED DIANA AND HUNTING SCENE
German, 17th century, probably by Christoph Maucher (1642-1706).
Fully sculpted carved ebony handle depicting Diana with hunting dog and hunting scene with lion, lioness, horse, wild boar and dog. Smooth metal grip ferrules. Knife bolster in an edged baluster shape. Centre-pointed iron blade. Forge mark.
L approx. 22.7 cm and 24 cm respectively.
One handle with crack, minor defects. Blades partially corroded.
A handle with a hunting scene among lions and bears, which is similar to our handle in terms of carving, is attributed to Christoph Maucher, who worked in Schwäbisch Gmünd. Cf. Angelika Ehmer. The Mauchers. Schwäbisch Gmünd. pp. 86/87, figs. 22 and 23.
