Lot no. 3204
LOUIS ABEL-TRUCHET (Versailles 1857-1918 Auxerre) Paris, le marché de fleurs en hiver, Place Clichy. Oil on canvas. Signed lower right: Abel Truchet 46.5 × 55.5 cm. Provenance: European collection. Place Clichy, located at the foot of Montmartre, was one of the liveliest squares in north-west Paris around 1900. Its numerous cafés, artists' studios and cinemas as well as its proximity to Saint-Lazare station made Place Clichy a place of vibrant life. The square's unmistakable landmark is the monument prominently located in its centre, which was commissioned by Napoleon III in 1869 and commemorates the defence of Paris against Prussian and Russian troops in 1814. In the work offered here, Abel-Truchet shows us the hustle and bustle on this cosmopolitan square, with numerous visitors to a flower market swarming through snow-covered Paris. Many Parisian painters, such as Pierre Auguste Renoir (1841-1919), Pierre Bonnard (1867-1947) and Pablo Picasso (1881-1973), depicted the hustle and bustle of Place Clichy in their art. Our work by Louis Abel-Truchet fits in seamlessly with these depictions of Place Clichy.
