The religious building represented by Lapito is the Abbey of Santa Maria di Palazzolo, a Cistercian abbey south of Rome in Italy. The site lies in the heart of a wooded massif in the Alban Hills, overlooking Lake Albano. The church has undergone several renovations in the last century, including the removal of the two 18th-century towers. The painting by Lapito bears witness to the state of the religious complex around 1820-1830. The painting was certainly based on Lapito's studies and memories between 1820 and 1826, a period during which he travelled extensively in Europe (Germany, the Netherlands, Switzerland, Italy and Corsica) before settling in Paris.
