Lot no. 476
Louis FRANCAIS (Plombières, 1814 - Paris, 1897 )
Orpheus at the tomb of Eurydice
Oil on canvas (Original canvas)
Signed 'Français' lower right
(Restorations)
30.5 x 40.5 cm
Provenance: Private collection, Gironde
Our painting reproduces, with a few variations, the composition of a painting exhibited at the 1863 Salon by Louis Français, entitled Orpheus at the Tomb of Eurydice. The hero has just lost his beloved and can no longer find the courage to play his lyre at his feet. Inspired by Virgil's Georgics, this theme inspires a deep melancholy, reinforced by the night, where the clothes of the funeral procession contrast with the thick darkness, which is not found in the Salon painting.
