Lot no. 539
Louis HERSENT and workshop (Paris, 1777-1860) Portrait of Cardinal Anne-Antoine-Jules de Clermont-Tonnerre (1749 -1830) Oil on canvas (Original canvas) Canvas from the BELOT house 73.5 x 60 cm Provenance: Private collection, Brittany Antoine-Jules de Clermont-Tonnerre regained his title of Peer of France under the Restoration and was appointed Archbishop of Toulouse in 1820 and elevated to the purple of the cardinalate in 1823. Co-celebrant at the coronation of Charles X, he was part of the first promotion of the Order of the Holy Spirit during his reign, in 1825. It is with this new distinction that he poses for Louis Hersent, seated in an armchair, hands folded, his dignified yet amused gaze meeting ours. An autograph replica of an earlier version, signed and dated 1825 and preserved in the model's family1, was recently sold in our showrooms2. We offer here another version of this famous portrait, produced with the help of the studio. 1. See A.-M. de Brem, Louis Hersent 1777-1860.
