Heir to a long line of stonemasons, Louis Botinelly was born in Digne in 1883. In 1895, Louis began his apprenticeship in the family workshop. He entered the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Marseille in 1900. In 1904, he obtained a scholarship and travelled to Italy. In 1906, he was admitted to the studio of Jules Coutan (1848-1939) at the École Nationale des Beaux-Arts. He spent most of his career in and around Marseille, where he received numerous official commissions, both religious and monumental. Provenance: a country house in Aix on the road to Le Tholonet
