Louis Napoléon BONAPARTE, future Napoléon III (1808-1873) View of Arenenberg Castle Pencil, wash and brown ink 15.5 x 15.5 cm Provenance : Fontainebleau sale, 25 March 2018, lot 175 View of Arenenberg Castle, black chalk, wash and brown ink, by Louis-Napoléon Bonaparte, future Napoléon III Commentary: Purchased by his mother Hortense during her exile, the future emperor Napoleon III, who was studying in Augsburg, came to Arenenberg during his adolescence. In 1837, he returned to Arenenberg, where Hortense died on 5 October of that year. In 1843, he decided to sell Arenenberg to finance his political activities.
