Lot no. 2795
Louis Robert Carrier-Belleuse (1848 Paris - 1913 ibid.)
"Charmeuse de panthères". Original title
Gilt and brown patinated bronze in combination with dark green and black mottled, lightly veined marble, 1892, lifetime cast. Large group of figures with a female nude sitting on a column stump and playfully summoning two panthers at her feet - symbolising unbridled strength, wildness and grace. Carrier-Belleuse first exhibited "La Charmeuse de Panthères" at the Salon in 1892, and its great success is reflected in the various editions that were realised. Carrier-Belleuse, who worked as a painter, sculptor and ceramicist, was the son and pupil of the famous sculptor Albert-Ernest Carrier-Belleuse, with whom he worked at the Sèvres manufactory. He also studied at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris under Gustave Boulanger and Alexandre Cabanel. In 1889 Carrier-Belleuse became artistic director of the Faïencerie of Choisy-le-Roi, and in the same year he received an award for a sculpture at the Salon. H. 71 cm.
