Lot no. 331
Louis-Robert CARRIER-BELLEUSE (Paris, 1848 - 1913) Swan vase Choisy earthenware Signed 'LOUIS.CARRIER.BELLEUSE.' on the back Bears the mark of the manufacture of Choisy-le-Roi underneath (Small restoration on the back right leg of the frog) Height: 60.0 cm Louis-Robert Carrier-Belleuse is the perfect example of the complete artist of Belle Epoque Paris. Both a painter and a sculptor, he was honoured at the Salon for a painting in 1881 and for a sculpture in 1889. Trained by Gustave Boulanger and Alexandre Cabanel, it was above all with his father, the famous sculptor Albert-Ernest, that our artist's talents developed. Father and son worked together at the Manufacture de Sèvres - Albert-Ernest Carrier-Belleuse was director at the time - before Louis-Robert trained in ceramics directly with Théodore Deck. Our Swan Vase bears witness to our artist's virtuous collaboration with the Choisy-le-Roi faience factory, where he was artistic director from 1889. In his painting Le sculpteur animalier exhibited at the 1894 Salon (fig. 1, anonymous sale; Paris, Christie's, 21 June 2011, no. 119), the artist depicts himself at work on our group, proof of the importance our artist gave to this model.
