Lot no. 567
Louis SOUTTER (1871-1942), "Orbe", Indian ink on lined paper, titled on the back. H. 22 x 17.5 cm The product of Soutter's observation of everyday life, this drawing is one of a series of drawings of towns and villages that he made during his hikes of several days across Switzerland, or during walks around the Hospice for the Elderly and Destitute in Ballaigues, where he stayed from 1923 onwards. Soutter chose a vertical, low-angle view of the town of Orbe and its church, accentuating the height of the building façades, which are limited to the frame of the composition. The sustained, rhythmic use of hatching, punctuated by areas left completely blank, appearing as if left in the light, draws attention to the condensed tangle of buildings that stand together in what could be the light at the end of the day.
