Lot no. 607
Louis Tuaillon. (1862 Berlin - 1919 ibid.)
"Amazon on horseback". Original title
Bronze, black patina. Signed; black marble base. Touaillon modelled the Amazon from 1890-1895 during his stay in Rome and exhibited her with phenomenal success at the Great Berlin Art Exhibition in 1895. This is not only Touaillon's main work, but also one of the most important works of German sculpture around 1900. In 1897, the Nationalgalerie purchased a life-size version from the artist for 60,000 RM and installed it in 1898. In 1903, moulds of the sculpture were made for smaller casts by the Berlin foundry Hermann Noack. The patron Eduard Arnhold donated one of these approximately 85 cm high figures to the Kunsthalle Bremen and the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York. In 1905, the German Emperor Wilhelm II had a monumental, larger-than-life cast made and placed in Berlin's Tiergarten Park. Tuaillon, who had been a member of the Berlin Secession since 1902 and was appointed professor at the Berlin Academy of Art in 1906, was one of the pioneers of modernism in the Berlin school of sculpture. Bronze h. 36.5 cm; total h. 39.5 cm.
