[LOUIS XVII]. Jean-Baptiste GOMIN (1757-1841). P.A., [1795 ?] 1 fol. page, tax stamp. Report on the surveillance of Louis XVII and his sister in the Temple prison, written by their warden. "Louis-Charles, born 27 March 1785, died 8 June 1795 at 2 o'clock in the afternoon. Under these dates, Gomin copied an extract from the report of deputy Mathieu, of the Committee of Public Safety, dated 2 December 1794. The Committee's duty "is to present to the Convention a simple account of the measures taken by it to ensure the service of the Temple and the custody of the children of the T. [Tyrant] at the time of 9 Thermidor, a new Guardian (Laurent) had been placed at the Temple by the Committee of Public Safety, a single guardian has since seemed inadequate", and a new guardian was added to the first [...]....] and, as in the eyes of thoughtful and shy men the permanence of two individuals at the same post arouses the idea of a possible seduction with time, to complete and ensure all the better the detention of the children of the tyrant, the Committee decided that, each day and successively, one of the civil committees of the 48 sections of Paris, will provide a member to fill, for 24 hours, the functions of guard, concurrently with the two appointed to fixed post [....] to remove any air of verisimilitude from fabulous stories and any pretext for complaints or agitation from malice, whether active or slanderous". In the margin of the document, Alcide de Beauchesne wrote: "De la main de Gomin, gardien du Temple". Provenance: Alcide de Beauchesne.
