LOUŸS Pierre (1870-1925). Sanguines. Paris, Charpentier, 1903; in-12 red morocco, three gilt fillets framing the covers, ribbed spine decorated with multiple gilt fillets intersecting at the corners, royal blue morocco linings edged with a gilt fillet, red moire endpapers, double endpapers, gilt edges on witnesses, cover (Semet et Plumelle). Partly first edition of this collection of short stories, including L'Homme de Pourpre. ☞ One of 15 copies on Whatman (No. 13), first paper with 15 Japon. It is enriched with 4 autograph pieces: Sonnet by Pierre Louÿs dedicated to Marguerite Moreno, of the Comédie française, with preserved envelope: "You are the Lover and you are the Queen..." Very elaborate draft of the above sonnet. Letter from J.-M. de Heredia to Pierre Louÿs, headed for the Arsenal. He apologizes for having had to retouch Louÿs's text in the Journal: "what an indignity that a writer like you should be sacrificed to advertisements! A 5-page in-4 reply from Pierre Louÿs to criticisms sent to him by the Intermédiaire des Curieux. He defends himself fiercely, but with magnanimity, because we can see how much he could have scorned someone who thought he had spotted historical errors in L'Homme de Pourpre.
