[BARBIER].- LOUYS (Pierre).
Les Chansons de Bilitis.
In-4 (32,5 × 26 cm), fawn calf, continuous decoration on the boards and spine (smooth and muted), painted in black and enhanced with black and gilt metal clasps, title in Greek on the upper board with gilt clasps, inside framed in fawn calf with gilt fillet and greek script, black silk lining and endpapers decorated with embroidery in grey-blue thread and gilt paint, endpapers painted in blue, black and gold, covers and spine preserved, gilt edges, folder and slipcase (L. D. Germain - Canape R.D. - 1924).
Edition decorated with 44 figures by George Barbier engraved on wood in colour by François-Louis Schmied, including the cover, the frontispiece, 8 full-page figures and 13 hors-texts. The illustration also includes numerous ornaments in the text.
Limited edition of 133 numbered copies (no. 11). The copy is enriched with :
- an original gouache signed F. L. Schmied on Japanese paper (a fragmentary engraving by Lepeère on the reverse);
- the woodcut corresponding to this gouache, signed F. L. Schmied and justified 1/40 ;
- a watercolour composition by George Barbier, signed "Larry 1910" and bearing an autograph signed letter from George Barbier to Pierre Louÿs.
The painted endpapers are probably in the hand of Josef Šíma who, having become his son-in-law, collaborated with Louise-Denise Germain, but did not sign his work. The binding, listed in the catalogue of the exhibition at the Bibliothèque de l'Arsenal in 2017, was not exhibited on this occasion.
An exceptional copy from the bibliophile Louis Barthou, enriched and preserved in a perfect decorated binding by Louise-Denise Germain.
