Corinth's images of flowers are certainly among his “great” paintings. Alternating with landscapes, figural paintings with a mythological background, landscapes featuring the Walchensee, interiors featuring portraits of his family or public figures and self-portraits in every context of his life, Corinth painted luxuriantly flourishing and chromatically unruly flowers as though he were cleaning off his palette, so to speak - liberated from all constraints and concentrating on pure, wild painting. This floral piece veritably bursts the format previously selected by the artist; the parallel placement of the brushstrokes homogenises the space between the fields of colour in the flowers, vase, book and table. Following his stroke in 1911 Corinth had to adapt his manner of painting to the given circumstances, in order to compensate for the uncertainty of his motor skills. Nature and painting seem to have converged in this way, leading to a dematerialisation and spiritualisation of his subject matter - a lofty goal that Corinth advanced towards in an unprecedented fashion.
It is possible to establish links back to Flemish floral still-life painting, however, the emphatic reference to impermanence is missing in Corinth's work. He seems to deliberately negate the profound meaning of traditional still-life painting, to defy it. He thus delightedly abolishes the flowers' natural delicacy with a tonality that seems amazingly bold, in order to transport them into a state of vibrantly sensual luxuriance.
