LUBA, Democratic Republic of Congo. Wood, white metal, animal skins, dark patina slightly oozing. The upper part of a "Kibango" chief's sceptre, a sign of power, prestige and authority. The base is carved with a serene female face and the "Mikanda" hairstyle of cascading buns evokes the figure's social status. Height: 44 cm (without base). Slight cracks and restorations.
