As well as being a brilliant doctor and surgeon who left his name to a paintbrush, Samuel Pozzi was an important social figure, close to the greatest artists of the belle époque. His majestic portrait by the famous American painter John Singer Sargent, now in the Hammer Museum in Los Angeles, bears witness to this. So it's hardly surprising that our man is depicted with a statuette in his hands, in front of the bas-relief of Saint Cecilia by Donnatello hanging on the wall behind him, attesting to his taste and passion for the arts. The life and work of Luc-Albert Flament remain to be discovered, but it is clear that he was one of the most renowned artists of the late 19th century to have the privilege of portraying one of the most important personalities of his time.
