Das 1561 datierte Gemälde entstand rund ein Jahr nach dem Tode des Philipp Melanchthon. Es zeigt den 1560 verstorbenen Reformator als Halbfigur mit aufgeschlagenem Buch. Im unteren Sockelbereich sind in lateinischer Sprache eine kurze Biographie des Theologen zu lesen sowie einige seiner Gedanken. Diese Komposition haben Lucas Cranach und seine Werkstatt in verschiedenen Varianten gemalt; es gibt ca. 8 bis 10 sehr ähnliche Bilder. Die posthumen Bildnisse dieses Bildtypus entstanden bis in die 80er Jahre (Stadtgeschichtliches Museum Leipzig, 1579; Dom zu Meißen 1581). Unser Gemälde gehört somit zum frühesten dieser Reihe. Wir danken Herrn Prof. Gunnar Heydenreich, Köln, der das Gemälde technologisch untersucht hat und dieses unter Berücksichtigung des Bildträgers, der Unterzeichnung und des Malschichtenaufbaus als ein Werk aus der Werkstatt des Lucas Cranach d. Provenance Private collection, South Germany. This work is dated 1561, around one year after Philipp Melanchton's death. It depicts the church reformer as a half-length figure with an opened book. A short biography of the theologian and some of his aphorisms are written in Latin at the base of the work. Lucas Cranach and his workshop painted several versions of this composition, and around 8 to 10 comparable works exist. Posthumous portraits of this kind continued to be painted until the 1580s (for example the work in the Stadtgeschichtliches Museum Leipzig, 1579; and Meißen Cathedral, 1581). The present work is one of the first in the series.
