He was born in Wieslet into a farming family, initially completed an apprenticeship as a painter and worked as a decorator in Zurich. Despite his pacifist convictions, he served in the First World War and subsequently joined the literary-artistic "Badenweiler Circle" around Annette Kolb, René Schickele and Julius Meier-Graefe.From 1922 to 1926 he studied at the Städelschule in Frankfurt am Main and from 1926 at the Académie Julian in Paris, where he was influenced by the Parisian avant-garde and influences from artists such as Cézanne, Gauguin and Bonnard. He had his most successful creative phase in Paris at the end of the 1920s. In 1934, the Nazi regime banned his first major exhibition as "un-German", whereupon Ludwig was banned from painting and had to hide many works. After 1945 he lived in Upper Bavaria and was able to work freely again. Ludwig became particularly famous for his landscape paintings ("The Blue Mountains") and portraits. His work represents an independent artistic position between German and French modern traditions.
