Ludwig Karl Maria Vierthaler was a German sculptor and university professor and is considered one of the most important Hanoverian artists of the 20th century. After studying at the Munich School of Applied Arts, Vierthaler initially worked as a small-scale sculptor, including for two years in the studio of Bruno Paul in Berlin. In 1910 he received his first commissions from the city of Hanover and the surrounding area, where he subsequently designed numerous public and private buildings. From 1915 to 1937, he taught at the Handwerker- und Kunstgewerbeschule Hannover (Hanover School of Crafts and Applied Arts). Annemarie Höhn was one of his students. At the same time, Vierthaler taught modelling at the Technische Hochschule (technical college) Hanover from 1920 onwards. In 1921 he became a member of the Hanover Cultural Association; in 1922, he was appointed honorary professor. From 1933 to 1936, he was a member of National Socialist German University Teachers' Association (NSDDB). In 1945, Vierthaler, together with Carl Buchheister, initiated the founding of the Bund Bildender Künstler für Norddeutschland (Association of Visual Artists for Northern Germany) in the Beethoven Hall of the Hanover City Hall, serving as its first chairman until 1953. Vierthaler organised the first North German post-war art exhibition, which was held in the Royal Gardens of Herrenhausen in Hanover in 1946. Vierthaler created numerous sculptural works in public spaces. The Pied Piper of Hamelin is a North German legend (Brothers Grimm, Deutsche Sagen, No. 245: "Die Kinder zu Hameln"): In 1284, a stranger offers to rid the town of Hamelin near Hanover of its plague of rats. He successfully expels the rats by playing his flute. Since the men on the council refuses to pay, the Pied Piper lures the children out of the town with his flute. The Pied Piper and the children are never seen again. Further artists and styles: Art Nouveau, applied arts, architectural sculpture, Richard Riemerschmid, Peter Behrens, Bruno Paul, Hugo Leven, Joseph Maria Olbrich, Karl Groß, Georg Klimt, Franz von Stuck
