Note:
An influential figure on the Hong Kong art scene, Lui Chun Kwong is part of a contemporary tradition of landscape painting in which the pictorial gesture becomes a form of meditation. A former professor at the Chinese University of Hong Kong, he has trained several generations of artists, notably in the highly influential Hong Kong Fine Arts Department.
This large-format diptych, produced in 2003, belongs to his Landscapes series, in which the pictorial material is laid down with an almost architectonic rigour. The coloured strata are superimposed in vibrant lines, in a tension between geometric abstraction and topographical suggestion. Far from being directly figurative, these mental landscapes reflect a search for balance between nature, memory and sensory perception.
These two autonomous canvases, conceived as a whole, engage in a subtle dialogue in their verticality and internal rhythms. They bear witness to an artistic language that is deeply rooted in contemporary Asian culture, while at the same time engaging with the formal concerns of Western abstraction.
