Luis Lagarto (Sevilla, 1556 - Puebla, 1624) "The Ascension of the Virgin" Illumination on vellum. 24.5 x 19cm. Lagarto was an important painter and illuminator of the late 16th and early 17th centuries, considered, according to the National Museum of Art of Mexico, "one of the best representatives of mannerism in New Spain." His artistic development, despite being born in Seville, took place mainly in New Spain, where he arrived around 1585, the year in which, according to the Blaisten Museum, he was appointed master of first letters at the Colegio de San Juan de Letrán in Mexico.  In 1600, he was commissioned by the Canonry of Puebla to complete one of his most important projects: the illumination of the books in the choir library at Puebla cathedral, the central theme of the exhibition at the Amparo Museum "Al canto de las quimeras. Luis Lagarto y la fábrica de la librería de coro de la Catedral de Puebla" (To the song of the chimeras. Luis Lagarto and the making of the choir library at the Cathedral of Puebla)  from December 2016 to March 2017. Other highlights from among his work are the watercolours on paper "The Annunciation" (c. 1610) and "Our Lady of the Rosary with Saint Catherine of Alexandria and Santa Catherine" (1611), both in the National Museum of Art of Mexico; the miniature "Immaculate Conception" (1619), in the Museum of America in Madrid; or "The Burial of Christ" (1612), in the Blaisten Collection. We must also mention the contributions made by the historian Guillermo Tovar de Teresa (Mexico, 1956 - 2013) with his monograph on the family of illuminators named Lagarto, called "Un rescate de la Fantasía: El arte de los Lagarto, iluminadores novohispanos de los siglos XVI y XVII" (Rescuing Fantasy: The Art of the Lagartos, New Spanish Illuminators of the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries) 1998.
