THE PRINCE IMPERIAL'S UNIFORM
Infantry second lieutenant's uniform, model 1867
In black cloth with two rows of five buttons on the front and four buttons on the back, with a gilded brass eagle. Daffodil collar and piping.
Epaulette loops in silver passementerie, chest strap for wearing the military medal and the Legion of Honour plaque.
Canvas lining, partly quilted.
Manufacturer's label "Paule-Régiment des Guides-Tailleur de S.M L'empereur et de sa Maison Militaire". With its madder-coloured trousers with double braid in silver piping and black piping.
B.E. Circa 1869-1870
Provenance :
- Entrusted in 1870 to the painter Jules Lefevre for the portrait of the Imperial Prince, commissioned by the Emperor.
- The belt and sword were returned when the Prince left for the Army of the East in 1870.
- The tunic and trousers remain in the family of the painter Jules LEFEVRE.
- Millon-Jutheau sale, 15 December 1986, lot 70 (Expert Jean Claude Dey).
The uniform was sold with a print of a photograph of the Prince wearing the uniform and annotated in the hand of the painter Lefebvre as well as a certificate in his hand recalling the origin of the uniform (absent today).

Commentary:
The Prince was appointed second lieutenant of infantry in 1869 and photographed in this uniform by Aimé Lejeune in particular and portrayed by Pichat.
He followed his father during the 1870 campaign in this uniform.
