While the territories of the United Provinces had been occupied by the French armies since January 1795, the town of Luxembourg remained the only place in the Austrian Netherlands that had not been subjugated by the French. The 12,000-strong garrison, commanded by Marshal Bender, capitulated on 7 June 1795 after an 8-month siege.
