Lot no. 1122
LYRE PENDULUM WITH SECONDS AND DATE Louis XVI, Paris around 1780, the chapter ring signed Furet à Paris. Gilt bronze and white and grey marble. Open-worked frame in the shape of a lyre, the top decorated with a woman's face in a halo and garlands of flowers. On a stepped marble base with a recessed top and roundel feet. The base decorated with a meander frieze, beadwork and chains. The clock with partly skeletonised movement mounted on an oscillating compensation gridiron pendulum. White enamel chapter ring with Roman hours, Arabic minutes and Arabic date numerals in black and red. Movement with scissor escapement. On a later base with glass lintel. H 52 cm. Wear to the marble base, minimal losses to the dial ring. The lyre pendulum is a very specific design from the Louis XVI period and is dedicated to the theme of music. Technically, there are two basic types: Pendulums that have a fixed movement, at best with a ring-shaped pendulum bezel arranged around the case, and pendulums in which the movement and dial are integrated into the swinging pendulum. The pendulum offered here, made by Parisian clockmaker Furet, features this second, ingenious system of the free-swinging pendulum. The rods of the rust pendulum are displayed in a decorative manner and represent the strings of the lyre. A sun figure, usually with a Medusa head in a halo, completes the upper part of this decorative pendulum.
