John Macgregor (Drynie 1797 - Boulogne 1857) was a Scottish merchant, politician, traveller and writer, not to be confused with the author of the ascent of Mont Blanc in 1853. He emigrated with his parents to Nova Scotia, settling in Prince Edward Island where he served successively as sheriff and member of parliament, before returning to England in 1828. Appointed Chairman of the British Bank in 1849, he was forced into exile in France when the bank failed. He travelled extensively in Europe and the British North American colonies and published numerous works.
