Lot no. 36
MACHIAVEL (Nicolas). Tutte le opere di Nicolò Machiavelli... divise in V. parti, et di nuovo con somma accuratezza ristampate. S.l.n.n., 1550 [i.e. circa 1615]. 5 parts in one small volume in-4, fawn calf, double gilt fillet border, spine decorated, smooth edges (19th century binding). First of the editions known as della testina, because of the portrait of Machiavelli which adorns their title. These five editions of Machiavelli's works were all printed in the 17th century, usually in Geneva, but published under the false date of 1550 to avoid censorship. The present edition dates from around 1615 and is probably not from Geneva.
Abundant marginalia handwritten in French, in pencil and ink. Upper spine split, hinges and corners rubbed, a few small marginal rings.
