MAFFEI (Giovanni Pietro). History of the East and West Indies. Paris, Robert de Ninville, 1665; 2 parts in one vol. in-4 (245 x 174 mm), spotted calf, ribbed spine decorated with gilt fleurons (Binding of the period). The first general history of the Portuguese Jesuit missions in Brazil, India, Japan and China, and of the power struggles and conquests of the Lusitanian kingdom in these various countries.
Thanks to Prince Henry of Portugal, Maffei was able to work on the state archives in Lisbon.
This is the first edition of the translation by Abbé de Pure. Another translation, by Canon Arnault de la Borie, appeared in Lyon in 1603.
A pleasant copy in contemporary binding (paper a little yellowed).
