Lot no. 2
Magnificent applied Christ figure from a processional cross in mercury-gilded and chased copper. Limoges. France. Early 13th century.
16,3 × 17,3 cm.
Our corpus presents a very slender figure with a pronounced bend at the hip, wearing a perizonium tied in a highly decorative knot.
It is in remarkable condition, with no losses, and retains much of its original gilding, worn by age on the most projecting areas, revealing the beautiful reddish tone of the ancient copper beneath.
We can find a few examples similar to our Christ, though executed in a somewhat cruder manner, such as the applied figure on a Eucharistic casket in engraved, chased, and gilt copper, dated circa 1200, from a Limoges workshop, now in the Parish of Santa María la Real in Fitero, Navarra.
