Magnificent set comprising a Sevigné bow pendant, gitanilla earrings, and a shuttle-shaped ring in chased, cut laminated, and drawn gold set with emeralds. Córdoba, early 18th century. Marked with the rampant lion assay mark. Pendant dimensions: 10 x 5.5 cm. Earrings dimensions: 6 x 3.5 cm. Total weight of the set: 42 g. The Museum of Antequera preserves in its collection a three-part neck cross or bow pendant — as described in its catalogue entry — very similar to ours, originating from the Church of Santo Domingo in Antequera and bearing a Córdoba assay mark, like our example. (https://museoantequera.es/obras/cruz-o-lazo-de-pescuezo-de-tres-cuerpos-esmeraldas/) Another almost identical example forms part of the collection of the Victoria & Albert Museum in London (inv. no. M.84-1913). https://collections.vam.ac.uk/item/O116843/pendant-unknown/ Likewise, the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York preserves in its collection a pair of earrings similar to ours (Inv. 1980.343.24, .25). https://www.metmuseum.org/art/collection/search/206850 Also noteworthy is the article by Lourdes P. Iturriaga published on the website https://diamantescreados.es, entitled “18th-Century Jewellery in Spain – Part II”, in which, discussing Sevigné bows such as ours, she states: “Spanish Sevigné, first half of the 18th century, in gold and emeralds. The origin of the Sevigné should be sought in Spain, although this type of ornament was particularly developed in France and England, and to a lesser extent in Italy. At times, their distant Spanish origins seem proven by the disproportionate size of certain examples. The larger bows are mostly from Córdoba and may be considered among the most important jewels of the 18th century; they are usually marked with the ‘rampant lion’. And as a most important detail, it should be noted that ‘the larger the mark, the older the piece.’”
