Magnificent Silver-Gilt Yataghan, Ottoman Empire (Greece), circa 1800. An exceptional example of an 18th-19th century Ottoman yataghan, probably crafted in the Greek provinces of the empire. The deeply curved steel blade features the traditional single-edge profile typical of yataghans. The hilt and scabbard are remarkable works of art-both are made of finely embossed silver with rich gilding, exhibiting a dense vegetal and floral motif in the Ottoman Baroque style. The hilt is capped with a characteristic "eared" pommel, covered in ornate repousse silverwork and highlighted with gilded accents. This lavish weapon reflects both the martial prestige and the opulence of its noble or high-ranking owner. A museum-quality piece representing the refined artistry of silversmiths active in the Balkans. Very good, condition, blade with age-related patina, silver and gilding well preserved. Length 68 cm.
