Lot no. 2647
MAGRITTE (René). [Ceci est un morceau de fromage]. 18 March 1958. One folio page, handwritten in biros. Autograph letter with small in-text sketches, situated, dated and signed by the artist. In this letter, René Magritte gives advice on framing the painting enclosed with the letter. He gives a precise description of the frame to be made and how the canvas should be placed under a cheese bell to form an object entitled "Ceci est un morceau de fromage" ("This is a piece of cheese"). This Surrealist sculpture is thought to have been made for the first time around 1936-1937. The letter is addressed to Mme Zervos, who may have been Yvonne Zervos (1905-1970), wife of Christian Zervos, director of the M.A.I. gallery in Paris and co-founder, with her husband, of the publishing house Cahiers d'Art. This highly interesting archival document is in very good condition. Very good condition Slight trace of central crease
