MAIOLICA ISTORIATO ALBARELLO - The Embden Collection
Urbino, workshop of Orazio Fontana (?), ca. 1560–70.
Cylindrical shape with a curved neck and base. Old Testament scene from the Book of Moses, Joshua and Caleb with an oversized vine, which they are carrying on a pole, between tall pine trees in front of a wide river landscape with cliffs.
H 19 cm.
Hairline crack.

The Arlette and Antony Embden Collection, France.
The shape and characteristics of this decoration are reminiscent of a large series of majolica items from the Apothecary of the Santuario di Loreto, now the Museo del Palazzo Apostolico di Loreto, most of which are attributed to the workshop of Orazio Fontana (J. Rasmussen, The Robert Lehmann Collection, Metropolitan Museum of Art 1989, pp. 172–173, Nos. 102 and 103).
