MAIOLICA ISTORIATO DISH - The Embden Collection
Duchy of Urbino, last third of the 16th century.
Painted with a woman in a robe from Antiquity handing a key to a Roman general, who is grouped with other soldiers in front of a tent, against the backdrop of a harbor landscape with architecture and figures carrying loads seen from behind.
Ø 25.5 cm.
Chips to the rim.

The Arlette and Antony Embden Collection, France.
An istoriato plate (Venice) from Stuttgart depicts a similar scene with a handing over of keys and is inscribed “sipion sic africhano” on the verso, visualizing the “magnanimity of the Roman general Scipio Africanus” (Württembergisches Landesmuseum, Inv.
