Lot no. 114
Majerus, Michel (1967 Esch, Luxemburg - 2002 Niederanven) Another Flowershop 2001. Öl auf Leinwand. 270 x 270cm. Signiert und datiert rückseitig: Majerus 01. Provenienz: Galerie Neugerriemschneider, Berlin Privatsammlung, Norddeutschland. Literatur: Estate Michel Majerus (Hrsg.): If we are dead, so it is, Zürich, 2007, Farb-Abb. (unpaginiert). (Robert Fleck, in: Michel Majerus, Installationen 92-02, Köln 2005, S. 184) Majerus, Michel (1967 Esch, Luxemburg - 2002 Niederanven) Another Flower shop. 2001. Oil on canvas. 270 x 270cm. Signed and dated on verso: Majerus 01. Provenance: Gallery Neugerriemschneider, Berlin. Private collection, northern Germany. Literature: Estate Michel Majerus (Ed.): If we are dead, so it is, Zurich, 2007, col.ill. (unpaginated). Unlike any other artist of his generation Michel Majerus's work is characterised by an aesthetic that draws on contemporary phenomena such as the game, the rave and certain shared youth cultures. At the same time his determined, philosophical approach to these phenomena and their effects on culture especially painting and the variety of conclusions he has come to, show why the background of his work is that important. "When reviewing his oeuvre one can state that what fascinated him most was the power of the two-dimensional static image that - deprived of its frame - can become a kind of second skin for parts of space through the magnifying capacities of projection and digital techniques. The power of that two-dimensional image - in his painterly works as well as in his installations - is mostly achieved through effects. To build up new effects on the basis of abstract or public signets, is his real subject. But you can't talk about effects in painting. Therefore language remains but an understatement as stated in his contribution to the exhibition catalogue of Manifesta 2. 'The requirements on my side are new in as much as the topic has by now basically become history. That opens up space for a re-evaluation.'" (Robert Fleck, in: Michel Majerus, Installationen 92-02, Cologne 2005, p. 184)
