Scuffing on binding, loss of a fragment of leather on spine, ownership inscription on a blank flyleaf. A work by the Russian writer, ethnographer, memoirist, traveller and honorary member of the St Petersburg Academy of Sciences (1900), Sergey Vasilyevich Maksimov (1831-1901), containing explanations of various Russian colloquial words and expressions, the original meaning of which has been lost to most people. The folklorist's works were published several times, both during his lifetime and subsequently, and continue to be reprinted in large quantities today.
