Lot no. 22
MALLARMÉ (Stéphane). L'Après-midi d'un faune. Paris, Alphonse Derenne, 1876. In-4, leaves, white felt cover from Japan titled in gilt, pink and black silk cords, folder and slipcase. First edition of one of the masterpieces of Symbolism. L'Après-midi d'un faune is considered to be the masterpiece of Mallarmé, who attached great importance to its publication and oversaw every detail. When it came out, the poem was not as successful as expected: Cladel, Dierx and Mendès were the only people in the entire Parnasse to support it. Mallarmé then offered it only to his favourite disciples and friends. This famous platelet is decorated with four woodcuts by Édouard Manet, including a flying frontispiece on japonure, an ex-libris, a header for the poem and a cul-de-lampe. The first two engravings have been delicately enhanced in pink watercolour by Manet himself. Edition of 195 copies, this one of 175 on hollande (n°192), justified in pen by the author. Cover and margins sunned. Carteret, II, 94 - Vicaire, V, 473 - Monda & Montel, 8-13 - En français dans le texte, n°302.
