Lot no. 23
MALLARMÉ (Stéphane). Les Poésies de Stéphane Mallarmé photolithographed from the definitive manuscript. Paris, La Revue indépendante, 1887. 9 fascicules in-4, sheets, uncut, in printed Japanese paper covers, bearing the titles Premiers poëmes. Partly first edition, illustrated with an etching "La grande lyre" by Félicien Rops as a frontispiece. The photolithographed text reproduces 35 poems copied by the poet, some of which have already appeared, such as L'Après-midi d'un Faune published by Derenne in 1876, and others published in L'Artiste (1862), Le Parnasse contemporain (1866, 1869), Le Parnasse satirique (1878), La Revue Critique (1884), Les Poètes maudits (1884), La Revue indépendante (1885), La Vogue (1886), etc. Thirteen poems are published here for the first time. Extremely rare and superb edition of 47 copies on japon. All the quires are complete with their Japanese felt paper covers and are all justified. The publication was entrusted to Edouard Dujardin, director of the Revue indépendante. For the occasion, Mallarmé reworked some of the poems and carefully calligraphed them. These autograph manuscripts have been reproduced here, slightly reduced: "I find the effect produced by the reduction delightful: it is an admirable idea that has come to you by a roundabout way [...] the text plays both the manuscript and the printed word" (Letter from Mallarmé to Dujardin, 24 May 1887). Smudging to the lower right-hand corner of a leaf in the 3rd quire. Carteret II, p. 96.
