This copy is taken from the edition of 9 plus 3 artist's proofs performed in 1972. It consists of an inscribed clay pipe and an iridescent glass bubble. Its title derives from a quotation from Friedrich Engels, which was reproduced in capital letters on the cover of La Révolution surréaliste in 1926. Engels said: "What these gentlemen lack is dialectics"; Man Ray made it clear: "what we lack is the imagination". Playing with the meaning attributed to the pipe, a staple of Dadaist and Surrealist conceptual art, Man Ray invites us to create a story that connects the objects, the pipe and the bubble, and the title.
