C'est une sorte d'effet mythologique » (Marcel Duchamp) Commandé par son mécène Katherine Dreier, qui voulait offrir un cadeau à sa soeur, ce readymade est signé sous le pseudonyme Rrose Selavy. Sous cette nouvelle identité artistique à consonance féminine et juive, Marcel Duchamp incarne ce qui pour lui est désormais la« base de tout » : Eros c'est la vie. Les morceaux de sucre remplissant cette cage sans vie induisent le plaisir et l'impermanence, tandis que les cubes de marbre et l'os de sèche évoquent ce qui reste après la vie. Avec le titre, Duchamp interroge l'ordre du corps et la logique du désir. «It is a readymade in which sugar is transformed into marble. It is a kind of mythological effect» (Marcel Duchamp) Commissioned by his patron Katherine Dreier, who wanted to offer a gift to her sister, this readymade is signed under the pseudonym Rrose Selavy. Under this new artistic identity with a feminine and Jewish sound, Marcel Duchamp embodied what for him was henceforth the «basis of everything»: Eros is life. The sugar cubes filling this lifeless cage suggest pleasure and impermanence, while the marble cubes and dry bone evoke what remains after life.
