Lot no. 30
Man Ray - Cela Vit (Portrait of Marcel Duchamp), 1971 Original etching and aquatint on Arches paper, signed in pencil. Limited edition of 125 + XXXV. Publisher: Georges Visat, Paris, 1971. Ref: Anselmino n21. Very good condition, 38 x 28 cm. This very striking Portrait of Marcel Duchamp was reworked by Man Ray in Georges Visat?s Paris studio in 1971, based on a mixed-media print he had first created in 1923. The original print was derived from a photograph of Duchamp, with the background hand-retouched on the negative using scraper-work to form the geometric pattern and inscriptions. For the 1971 version, Man Ray used an example of the original ?rayograph,? which was then transferred onto a photosensitized copperplate. He subsequently reworked the plate directly with etching and aquatint. Original etching and aquatint on Arches vellum, signed in pencil. Edition limited to 125 copies + XXXV. Publisher: Georges Visat, Paris, 1971. R?f. Anselmino n21. Very good condition. 38 x 28 cm. This remarkable portrait was reworked by Man Ray in the Paris studio of Georges Visat in 1971, from a mixed media print that he had first produced in 1923. The original print came from a photograph by Duchamp, the background of which had been retouched by hand directly onto the negative using a scraper, to create the geometric motif and inscriptions. For the 1971 version, Man Ray used a copy of the original 'rayogram', which he had transferred to a photosensitised copper plate. He then reworked the plate directly using etching and aquatint techniques.
