Spine rebound with the original, except for the upper headpiece (period binding). Second edition. Rare guide to the Chamonix valley. Illustrated with a fold-out map. A copy full of drawings and engravings: Vue du Pont du Mont-Blanc à Genève (engraving), Bonnevile (pen drawing signed J. A. M.), Sionzier (pen drawing signed E. M. for Elizabeth Mackenzie), Glacier des Bossons (fold-out pencil drawing, signed E. M.). Bound after page 74 is an article from an English newspaper falsely announcing in 1855 the discovery of Jacques Balmat's body at the Source de l'Arveyron. Bound at the end: L'Abbé CAUX et Victor TAIRRAZ: Tentative ascent of Mont-Blanc, by Carelli de Rocca Castello, Perkins (a young Englishman) and Abbé Caux on 4 August 1842 (manuscript). Account by one of the protagonists, the vicar of Chamonix, at the request of Victor Tairraz, maître d'hôtel, of this attempted ascent, addressed to Mrs Mackenzie. Illustrated with a view of the ascent of Mont-Blanc, arrival at the Grands Mulets (lith. by Dubois) and the passage of a crevasse in the Bossons glacier by Louis Bleuler (aquatint on double page, foxing in the margins). Hardback: Grotte de Balme, Genève, Paschoud, 1827. In-16 re-engraved to in-12 format (extracts from accounts of visits to the cave above Magland by Saussure, Bourrit, etc.), illustrated with an engraving.
