Lot no. 3066
Brown herringbone zebra mink coat, the lining embroidered with the initials OC, and an ermine stole, the lining embroidered 'Oona'. Provenance: Oona Chaplin, née O'Neill (1925-1991), 4th and last wife of Charlie Chaplin, then by descent to this day. Oona and Charlie Chaplin Charlie Chaplin (1889-1977) was one of the most emblematic figures in the history of cinema. His meteoric rise took him from London to the United States thanks to his star character, Charlie Chaplin (The Tramp). His fourth wife, Oona Chaplin (1925-1991), was the daughter of Eugene O'Neill, the famous American playwright and winner of the Nobel Prize for Literature. A young actress and New York socialite, Oona briefly embarked on a career in Hollywood, where she crossed paths with the film legend. Seduced by her beauty and charisma, Charlie Chaplin began a relationship with her that quickly developed into a love affair. In 1943, at the age of 18, Oona married Chaplin, then 54. Despite criticism and disapproval from some close friends, their marriage was a happy one and they had eight children. Oona ended her public career to devote herself entirely to her family, supporting Charlie in his final years and bringing up their children at Manoir de Ban, their home in Corsier-sur-Vevey, Switzerland. Oona leaves behind a singular legacy: muse, mother and true matriarch of the Chaplin dynasty. She was undoubtedly the First Lady of one of the greatest names in cinema. Brown herringbone zebra mink coat and white ermine bolero This magnificent three-quarter length mink coat features a contrasting herringbone pattern in shades of brown and dark caramel. The slightly turned-up collar is extended by wide lapels, and the front is fastened by three buttons. Side pockets, also with slanted lapels, emphasise the waist. This coat was a staple of Oona Chaplin's winter wardrobe, and she frequently wore it to events with Charlie. Although the pattern makes it instantly recognisable, Oona had her initials 'OC' embroidered on the lining. The bolero is made from ivory ermine, which Oona reserved for gala evenings. Often used for capes and formal coats, white ermine was a luxurious and refined choice of fur, renowned for its soft texture and meticulous finish. More mischievous, this bolero is hand-embroidered with the first name 'Oona' on the inner lining.
